BlackBerry says India can't access encrypted data

BlackBerry says India can't access encrypted data

Denying reports that it has agreed to allow access to its encrypted corporate data to Indian authorities, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) on Thursday said unscrambling encrypted email on its devices is simply not "technologically feasible." India has been seeking access to all encryptedcommunications as the terrorists involved the 2008 Mumbai attack communicated with their handlers by using sophisticated technology. It wants the Canadian company to install a server in India to monitor this service.

However, RIM, which has got two reprieves since August and assured a solution by Jan 31, is not willing to compromise on the privacy of this encrypted service which has made its smart phones a darling of businesses.

Reacting to the report from New Delhi that it has agreed to installation of a 'network data analysis system' in India to let security agencies check secure BlackBerry data, RIM said it is 'inaccurate and misleading.'

The report conveys the impression as if it is "somehow enabling access to data" transmitted through its business server system, RIM told the Canadian Press.

"This is both false and technologically infeasible," it said.

This so-called "network data analysis system" is just a tool required to allow carriers in India to provide lawful access to its consumer services, including its instant messaging service, RIM was quoted as saying.

"This is not new information as RIM has repeatedly confirmed that it is co-operating with the government of India and enabling carriers to lawfully access consumer services to the same degree imposed on RIM's competitors in India."

Test BlackBerry’s interception system: Home ministry to DoT

NEW DELHI: India’s interior ministry has asked the telecoms department to validate BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion’s claims that it had installed a ‘cloud computing-based system’ to legally intercept messenger services on its handsets.

Earlier this month Canada’s RIM had told the home ministry that it had complied with the Indian government’s mandate to provide interception tools for BlackBerry messenger chats

“We are happy to confirm that as per the compliance schedule agreed by both Research in Motion and the Ministry Of Home Affairs, RIM infrastructure is ready to receive and process via the cloud computing-based system, lawfully intercepted BlackBerry messenger data from India service providers,” the Canadian company’s vice-president of industry, government and university relations Robert E Crow had said in a communication to the home ministry.

In a communication to the telecoms department, home ministry’s joint secretary Dharmendra Sharma said that RIM had agreed to provide a final solution to its messenger chat services by January 31, 2001, while adding that ‘according to the Canadian company, the cloud-based computing system was the final solution it was putting in place by January-end’ for this facility.

On Thursday, ET had reported that RIM had offered to install a network data analysis system at its premises in India, to end the three-year standoff between the Canadian company and security agencies here that have been demanding access to BlackBerry communications. But RIM on Thursday in a statement said that it had not provided any access to its highly-secure corporate emails.

HTC sent out a mysterious package apparently promising a 4G phone at CES with video calling, Google Android 2.2, and GPS, which may or may not be the rumored HTC thunderbolt for Verizon Wireless.

I got back to my desk today after a few days off to find a small white box from Waggener Edstrom, HTC's PR agency. It contained:
• A space about the right size for a large, slab-style smartphone
• A picture of an Android making a video call in Las Vegas
• A compass
• Four circular buttons with "G" on them in HTC's promotional font
• A "Froyo Lover" sticker
• A foam TV
• An Android figurine
Wrap that all together with recent rumors, and you see the promise of a 4G, Android 2.2-powered smartphone at CES. The most interesting aspect is the foam TV. I assume it means something dull, like carrier-provided video streaming or an HDMI output, but wouldn't it be great if the new HTC phone came with Mobile DTV or some other advanced form of access to many TV programs?
Now before you cry "HTC Thunderbolt," notice that the package didn't have any Verizon Wireless branding or colors on it, and the four Gs didn't include the magic letters "LTE." So this could be a teaser for a new smartphone for T-Mobile or Sprint, both of whom have networks that they brand as 4G.

Portable playstation Phone

SONY is set to compete against APPLE's iPHONE and RIM's BLACKBERRY and other mobile phones through its videogame system. AFP reports that a PLAYSTATION PORTABLE smartphone will be launched in NORTH AMERICA andEUROPE as early as the spring, according to the Japanese newspaper ASAHI SHIMBUN's English edition

Reportedly based on SONY's handheld PSP GO game console, the device would be made by SONY ERICSSON MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS and run GOOGLE's Android operating system. The PSP GO, launched in November 2009, already features software downloads through a wireless connection, allowing players to also browse the Internet, watch movies, playmusic and read books and comics.

The new PLAYSTATION handset would similarly work with SONY's online media platform, the company's answer to APPLE's iTUNES. SONY called the newspaper report "speculation" and declined to comment.

LG 72-inch LED TV,LZ9700

LG is blowing up the CES spot this year by introducing what will soon be the largest 3D enabled LED TV, the LZ9700. It measures a ridiculous 72-inches and produces images in both 3D and 2D. LG is mum on all the specs, but we do know that it will sport a 240hz refresh rate, 1920×1080 resolution, local LED dimming, USB inputs, DLNA compatible, Internet app enabled and LG’s Magic Motion Remote Control.

Infibeam listed Google Nexus S device for Rs. 24,000

Popular online retail site Infibeam has listed the recently announced Google Nexus S device for Rs. 24,000. Yes, it's the same company that gave India the Kindle alternative - Infibeam Pi reader. It's quite surprising to see such an early listing but there was no mention of a launch or availability date on the Infibeam website. Unlocked Google Nexus S is being sold for $529 (Rs. 23, 850) in the US via Best Buy website, which is accessible only via US or UK listed Internet Protocol addresses.

The Samsung manufactured Google Nexus S is the ideal Nexus One successor. Also, it's one of the first phones that comes with Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread pre-loaded along with a slew of Google Apps. It sports a 4-inch Super AMOLED Contour capacitive touch display that supports 800x480 pixel resolution, 1GHz Hummingbird CPU, which features in the Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab and even Galaxy Player. Featuring a 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD 480p video recording support, this smartphone offers 16GB on-board flash memory. Apparently, the stock Android doesn't record video at 720p HD and Google has repeated the history just like they did with Nexus One.

Nexus S also has a front facing VGA camera offering 640x480 pixel resolution for video calls. This quad-band GSM networks supporting phone is 3G ready and also offers Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n support. A near-field Communication chip is present but not many applications and services exist to make best of it. Of course, you'll have Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and Assisted GPS module for location based services.

Packing a 1500mAh Lithium-Ion battery, the Nexus S promises 14 hours of talktime on 2G networks and 6.7 hours of talk time on 3G networks.

In India, high-end Android smartphones like Nexus One (unofficially), HTC Desire, HTC Desire HD and Galaxy S are available between Rs. 26,000 and Rs. 29,000. It's unlikely for a recent Gingerbread phone with Super AMOLED to cost so low. So far we don't know if the price is correct or it would remain the same everywhere, we'll wait for more updates on the Nexus S for India.

Sony Ericsson Benchmarked X10 Mini Pro Successor Runs Android 2.3

We’re kinda-sorta expecting Sony Ericsson to launch the Hallon, Anzu, and Play at CES next week, but what about their Mobile World Congress plans? Well, that time last year they launchedthe X10 Mini Pro, an adorably tiny device with a surprisingly good keyboard, and based on a few pictures, it looks like they’re ready to refresh the form factor with some much beefier specs.

The processor has been cranked up to 1 GHz with an Adreno 205 GPU to provide some pretty impressive 3D graphics rendering. The screen resolution is estimated to be HVGA and Bravia-quality, not unlike the PlayStation phone, and measure 3 inches along the diagonal. The source mentions something about Android 2.4 running on the device, though Android 2.3 Gingerbread is all we can really recognize for now. There’s also a camera on the front and back, though there’s no word on the quality of either.

upcoming gadgets of 2011

SMARTPHONES that work as credit cards, 3D screens that work without glasses and an army of new tablet computers are poised to launch in 2011, in a year that could outshine the advances of the past 12 months.

Among the top advances coming soon is the ability to use mobile phones as credit cards, made possible with the addition of a computer chip and software using near-field communication technology.

While this technology, used in some store credit-card readers, has been available for some time, Google plans to launch it in a big way inside its upcoming Nexus S smartphone.

Google chief executive Eric Schmidt said the phone's Tap and Pay feature could be the first stage of a transition in which handsets "eventually replace credit cards".

The Google Nexus S, made by Samsung, will be given to Australian Google employees early next year.

Another new gadget tipped to launch in March next year will free 3D gaming fans from 3D glasses.

The handheld Nintendo 3DS game console will offer an autostereoscopic screen that delivers a 3D effect to the naked eye, and one that can be controlled with a switch for comfortable viewing.

Tablets are also expected to play a big part in 2011 tech temptations, with the second Apple iPad tipped for release in the first half of the year and many more tablets of different sizes, software and designs due out early next year.

Tablet computers are due to be launched early next year from BlackBerry, Acer, Motorola, ASUS, MSI and Toshiba.

HTC launches Windows 7 smartphone

HTC Corporation on Tuesday unveiled India's first Microsoft Windows Phone 7 smartphone, HD7. It will be available in exclusive tie-up with Bharti Airtel. Priced at Rs.29,990, the phone will available at authorised HTC resellers in India.

“Windows Phone 7 operating system is an entirely fresh mobile experience, on which HTC is excited to be going big. We see tremendous customer opportunities with the integration of Microsoft's most popular services,” said HTC India Country Head Ajay Sharma.

“The value Microsoft is bringing to mobile customers around the world sets a new benchmark for the industry and HTC is proud to be the first in bringing in the brand new Windows Phone 7 experience to India in partnership with Bharti Airtel,” he said. Airtel customers are being offered exclusive data pack to download 2GB data a month for six months at a special price of Rs.300.

“Microsoft Windows Phone 7 is an entirely fresh mobile experience crafted to help people get more done in fewer steps, while HD7 is a top-of-the-line smartphone offering cutting edge innovation with features like 4.3 inch WVGA display, 720p HD video recording and 1 Ghz processor,” Mr. Sharma added. HD7 includes a variety of cutting-edge technologies and a series of unique HTC applications that can be accessed through the new HTC Hub that complements the Windows Phone 7 Hub.

Best Business and Personal Mobile Devices

I'm confident that 2010 will go down as the year that personal and professional computing officially merged, as the iPhone finally knocked down the wall that had kept the two separate. Sure, working at home on personal PCs had already put holes in the structure, but it was the iPhone that took the barrier out completely.

What is the best mobile device for the new, integrated world? There are many, many options available from Apple, Research in Motion, and Hewlett-Packard's Palm division, as well as Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 and Google's Android hardware partners. InfoWorld.com has winnowed down all of these choices to the handful that matter.

Best touchscreen smartphone: Apple iPhone 4 InfoWorld has tested the iPhone against every business-capable competitor, and no one has come close. The iPhone excels at apps of all sorts, as well as Web surfing, email and other messaging, and media presentation (music, movies, TV, books, and so on). With iOS 4, it offers business-class security and management capabilities, breaking the BlackBerry's stranglehold in this arena. Only the defunct Windows Mobile joins iOS and BlackBerry OS as business-class.

The iPhone's use of iTunes, though disliked by IT, also ensures an easily accessible backup of all apps, media, and even document files. These backups can even be encrypted to comply with government regulations on managing personal information.

The iPhone 4 is not perfect. Its weakest aspect is its phone; users regularly complain of dropped calls and poor audio. It's also tied in the United States to the worst network (AT&T's). Both weaknesses ultimately need to change, and they're barriers for many people to buying an iPhone, as is the lack of a model with a physical keyboard.

But no other device comes close to the iPhone 4 in the ability to serve as a pocket computer, which is the "smart" in "smartphone."

If the AT&T tie-in or the poor phone quality issues prevent you from going for an iPhone 4, our recommended touch-only runner-up is the HTC Droid Incredible. Note that the device runs Android OS 2.2, which is not as secure as the iPhone and may not be allowed onto many corporate networks -- or at least not without a third-party software solution such as NitroDesk TouchDown or Good for Enterprise.

Best keyboard smartphone: RIM BlackBerry Torch The BlackBerry has long been the de facto smartphone standard, thanks to its messaging capabilities. Many executives use the BlackBerry as their primary device for conducting business via email, but RIM's devices have not been good with apps, the Web, or media presentation. The company's first attempt, the Storm, was a poorly designed iPhone clone, and the Storm 2 was little better.

However, the BlackBerry Torch 9800 is not like a previous BlackBerry -- well, it is and it isn't.

For messaging, the Torch works very much like a BlackBerry Bold -- the executive's BlackBerry of choice -- which makes it immediately comfortable for longtime BlackBerry users. Its slideout keyboard is essentially the same as the Bold's, so it's easy to type with.

Whereas Web browsing was the Achilles' heel of previous BlackBerrys, the Torch's new browser is thoroughly modern, displaying the Web in its full glory. And the Torch's touchscreen is both large enough and touch-responsive enough to handle the Web and iPhone-style apps well. At this point, there are few BlackBerry apps available, and many websites assume that the Torch is as Web-crippled as previous models, so they often autosubstitute a limited WAP version. As Torch adoption grows, both of these external limits should fade.

Although the Torch is tied to AT&T in the United States, that exclusivity will end soon, and you can expect models from all the major carriers this winter.

In a nutshell, the BlackBerry Torch is a good merger of the traditional BlackBerry messaging and security strengths with the modern touch, app, and Web capabilities pioneered by the iPhone.

If the BlackBerry Torch feels too old school for you, our recommended physical keyboard runner-up is the Motorola Droid 2. Note that the device runs Android OS 2.2, which is not as secure as the iPhone and may not be allowed onto many corporate networks without third-party protection.

Best tablet: Apple iPad A year ago, some pundits were questioning the viability of the then-unreleased iPad. Today, it has created a whole new market and proved a hit among consumers and businesses alike.

There's a reason for its success: The iPad is an amazingly good device, one that can act as a surrogate laptop much of the time. Its large screen is quite good for desktop-like Web browsing, as well as for running productivity apps, playing movies, and working with multiple email accounts. With hardware attachments, it can act as a presentation device or pull in photos from digital cameras, for example. Additionally, it's very portable, thanks to its low weight (1.5 pounds) and long battery life (10 to 11 hours is typical).

Plus, because of the iPad's use of iOS 4 and native support for Microsoft Exchange policies, it can be securely used in most businesses.

The iPad is not perfect. Its Safari browser, for example, doesn't work well with many applications-oriented websites such as Google Docs and Microsoft SharePoint, but it is amazingly capable for a first-generation product. None of the competing Android tablets comes close to the iPad in terms of capability or performance. The closest competitor, theSamsung Galaxy Tab, is a weak imitation.

The iPad is tied to AT&T, whose network is iffy in several cities, such as New York and San Francisco, but AT&T requires no long-term commitment to use its 3G data service; you sign up for a month at a time. Apple offers models with and without 3G radios; all models have Wi-Fi.

A new iPad this spring will all but certainly add front and rear cameras. It will probably be a bit thinner and perhaps faster, so you may want to wait. But today's model is a joy to use, and it's handy to boot. It's also likely to benefit from further software updates -- Apple is very good about ensuring that OS updates run on at least two previous generations of its hardware.

If for some reason the iPad doesn't appeal to you, we have no runner-up options. It's an iPad or nothing.

Expect new choices in the new year In 2010, the Android platform took off, quickly rivaling the iPhone in popularity. RIM finally delivered its first viable iPhone competitor, but has yet to follow up with other models or bring the new BlackBerry OS to its previous hits, the Bold and Curve. I expect Android to get even more competitive in 2010 -- and perhaps start filling some of its business security gaps. We should see the first tablets running a version of Android designed for tablets this spring. I also expect RIM to make a serious effort with its forthcoming PlayBook tablet and perhaps build on the Torch's momentum with smartphone upgrades.

Also in 2010, Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 crashed and burned, while Hewlett-Packard's acquisition of Palm put the struggling WebOS in deep freeze. On the tablet front, Hewlett-Packard's Windows 7-based Slate tablet proved to be more of a demonstration product than a serious product commitment. Either or both of these companies may get mobile religion in 2011 and even deliver on it. Nokia's smartphone strategy is in disarray, and it's unlikely to be a serious option in 2011 -- but you can never know for certain.

You can be sure that Apple will continue to put distance between itself and its competitors with new versions of the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. Google's Android has the best shot at keeping up.

But that's next year. For now, if you need a mobile device, you know what to get.

samsung rolls out its galaxy player with Android 2.2 Froyo OS

Samsung is about to debut the new Galaxy Player, an Android-based music and applications device that will be similar to the Galaxy S smartphone, but without the cellular connection. Samsung has confirmed it will unveil the media player at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month, according to Samsung follower, Samsung Hub.

Samsung Galaxy Player
The Samsung Galaxy Player

The device will have a front-facing VGA camera forSkype and other webcam applications, as well as a 3.2-megapixel camera on the back. It will be 9.9 mm thick with a 4-inch Super Clear LCD screen with WVGA resolution.

The Galaxy Player will run on the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, and it will have built-in WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0. It will come with 8-GB, 16-GB and 32-GB storage capabilities and will feature a 1 GHz processor.

Samsung did not respond to the E-Commerce Times' request for comments by press time.

Going Up Against Apple

The Galaxy Player fits niftily as a competitor to Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPod touch -- basically a smartphone without phone capabilities. This will complete Samsung's match-up with major Apple mobile devices. Samsung already competes head-to-head with the iPhone and the iPad.

While the iPod may have slipped as a major consumer device, the iPod touch -- and now Samsung's Galaxy Player -- addresses the gigantic tween market. Parents of teenagers are not quick to sign up for pricey smartphone plans for their children. However, a dumbphone on a family plan combined with an iPod touch or Samsung Galaxy Player completes the digital picture.

Freedom From the Data Plan

The absence of the smartphone's data plan may be the biggest competitive feature for the Galaxy Player.

"This is a good device for people who want a strong mobile computer that can provide gaming, mobile Web and email without the monthly data plan," Chris Hazelton, research director for mobile and wireless at the 451 Group, told TechNewsWorld. "The trade-off is you need to find WiFi when you need the network. Then what you get is access to 100,000 applications from the Android market."

Over the course of a year, there are plenty of savings to take by avoiding the smartphone's monthly bill.

"You can roll the dumbphone into a family plan and use the media player like a smartphone. The iPhone was a game changer, and you're seeing smartphones that are challenging the iPhone," said Hazelton. "The iPod touch has a similar grip on the market -- even more so -- and this is what is coming from the competition to challenge Apple."

Parents will like the device because they can apply parental controls. Kids will like it because they can get around the controls.

"It's a good device for kids because you can have control over the content they download -- even if they can get around it," said Hazelton. "Plus, they can do voice calls through Skype or other voice applications."

The Need to Match Apple

Ultimately, the difference in cost between dumbphones and smartphones will be in the monthly contract.

"As the price of subsidized smartphones continually decreases and the difference in cost between a dumbphone and a smartphone becomes negligible, the only real barrier to entry left is the data plan," said Michael Morgan, senior analyst, mobile devices, for ABI Research.

"However, it may be Samsung that needs these devices more than the market does," he told TechNewsWorld." With these media players, Samsung's device portfolio mimics that of Apple's with a phone, media player and tablet."

As Samsung completes its mobile device picture, Apple will have little to tempt the Android user from switching systems.

"With children using these media players, perhaps one day they will aspire to have a Samsung smartphone instead of an iPhone," said Morgan. "While at the moment, Samsung's content library is not the equivalent of Apple's iTunes or App Store, this could be built up over time, particularly if they port Android over to these devices and offer access to the Android application store.

Xbox 360 avatar on Microsoft Zune HD media devices

Microsoft is now offering Xbox avatar engraving on its Zune HD media devices.

Announced on Friday, potential Zune HD owners can choose from a number of virtual character poses using their very own Xbox LIVE avatar. Microsoft will then engrave the Xbox LIVE avatar straight onto your Zune HD in time for Christmas.

Zune HD2 rumors suggest that the software giant is working on a future device. Last month two job postings emerged relating to new Zune hardware design roles. The Zune maker is currently seeking principle and senior design developers. Considering the Zune HD was released in September 2009, it’s not likely that Microsoft is looking to tweak the design of the current model.

Rumors of a Zune HD2 device have been making the rounds for months now. Mary Jo Foley originally suggested that Microsoft was working on the HD2 after a tipster said new devices could arrive next year. The two new job roles seem to suggest that Microsoft is recruiting hardware design experts. A new commercial advertising the Zune HD emerged late last month which also shows Microsoft hasn’t forgotten about its media device.

Microsoft Xbox 360 is Number1 selling console in US

Market Research firm NPD has released its November figures which show Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is still the number one selling console in the United States.

The report notes that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is still the best selling console, having dominated the top spot for six straight months. The Xbox 360 sold nearly 1.4 million units in November compared to the 325,000 units in October. The figures show that 50% of spend on current generation consoles is on the Xbox 360 alone.

Microsoft launched its controller-less console accessory for the Xbox 360 across the world earlier this month. The Kinect sensor is a horizontal bar that sits at the base of your TV. The device has an RGB camera, depth sensor and multi-array microphone which runs proprietary software. Kinect allows for full-body 3D motion capture, facial recognition, and voice recognition. Owners will be able to interact with games titles using just their body. Pausing TV and fast forwarding movies can be achieved using a mix of hand movements and voice control.

Microsoft’s Kinect has been extremely popular. Microsoft recently revealed that it has sold 2.5 million Kinect units worldwide in just 25 days. The company expects to sell 5 million units by Christmas. The popularity of Kinect will likely contribute to the long shelf life of the Xbox 360. Microsoft has managed to keep the console fresh by updating its hardware and software regularly over the past five years. Do you expect Microsoft to introduce a new Xbox within the next two years?

Microsoft KIN Studio service is shutting down on Jan31,2011

Microsoft is shuttering its KIN Studio service on January 31, 2011.

Verizon customers are slowly receiving a leaflet to detail the changes. WPCentral has posted several images from the leaflet that show all KIN users will lose the ability to do everything over the air. Zune pass and email will still be available but features allowing the phone to sync to the cloud will be permanently disabled. The full list of changes is:

  • Feed Reader will stop working
  • Search Near me will stop working
  • Posting Photos to social sites will no longer be possible
  • Most pictures currently on Kin will only appear at thumbnail resolution
  • Posting to Social Networks will no longer work.
  • No comments from the loop
  • Social network contacts will disappear.
  • Loop will stop to work
  • Kin Spot will only send to emails.
  • Social networks only accessed from web browser.

The removal of said features cripples the platform entirely. Microsoft originally introduced the devices in May and killed them off after only two months. Microsoft said the decision to axe the Kin devices was to “focus exclusively on Windows Phone 7.” The software giant recently re-introduced both KIN devices on cheaper contracts. The Kin ONEm and TWOm, re-branded with the m appendage to their names, are currently available on two-year contracts at $19.99 and $49.99 respectively. The full retail price of the ONEm is $119.99 and the full price of the TWOm is $219.99. One of the early criticisms of both devices was the steep price plans and device costs. Microsoft and Verizon originally introduced both devices in May. The Kin ONE was priced at $49.99 and the TWO at $99.99. Microsoft and Verizon have cut the price of the devices in half to shift the remaining stock during holiday sales.

Microsoft Windows valued $110 billion surpassed IBM

Microsoft’s Windows operating system is now the most valuable software franchise in the world.

Windows, now valued at $110 billion, has surpassed IBM’s Middleware ($107 billion). The figures come courtesy of Trefis, a financial analysis firm who track the most popular stocks in the US. Trefis has been tracking Microsoft’s Windows sales over the past year and has published its results for all to see. “While most of the businesses continued to retain their position, Microsoft’s Windows Operating System emerged as the single most valuable software business segment in 2010. Microsoft Windows Operating System (at $110 billion) surpassed IBM’s Middleware, which at $107 billion now stands at a comfortable second,” states Trefis.

Windows isn’t the only software that’s doing well at Microsoft. The software giant’s other cash cow, Microsoft Office, now dominates the third position of most valuable software worldwide. Microsoft Office accounts for $86 billion compared to fourth place Oracle database software at $69 billion. Microsoft’s Windows operating system makes up about 41% of the company’s stock value. Microsoft Office contributes 32% to the company value.

Trefis attributes the dominance of Windows to an increase in PC shipments in 2010 and the phenomenal success of Windows 7. Worldwide PC shipments will reach 352.4 million units in 2010, a 14% increase from 2009, according to Gartner research. Windows sales have improved over the past year as a result of the increased PC shipments. Windows has also dominated the netbook market with 68% now running Windows.

It has been an incredibly successful year for Windows 7. Microsoft has confirmed that it has now sold over 240 million licenses of Windows 7 and that figure is expected to hit 300 million before the end of the year. Windows 7 now accounts for 25% of operating system market share. Microsoft’s success with Windows 7 began before the product was even widely available. Released in October 2009, the operating system has received praise from consumers, businesses and the media. In November 2009, Windows 7 managed to surpass Apple’s Snow Leopard market share in just two weeks. In early February it was revealed that Windows 7 had reached 10% market share in just three months.

Microsoft is currently in the planning and preparation stage for Windows 8. The software giant is expected to share more information and beta bits next year. Steve Ballmer has described the next release of Windows as the company’s “riskiest product bet”. Company officials are keeping any Windows 8 plans close to their chest. According to company insiders that have spoken to WinRumors, Microsoft is currently readying Windows 8 and is betting big on cloud computing. Microsoft is expected to build a ‘Windows Store‘ app store into Windows 8 and Kinect-like functionality. The software maker will also integrate social networking and cloud features into the heart of Windows to finally realize its vision of software+services. A number of cloud related Windows adverts will air over the next year to seek consumer awareness on the cloud.

Microsoft is currently readying its first Service Pack for Windows 7. A Release Candidate (RC) build was made available in October and a final version is expected in early 2011.

Lenovo IdeaPad Laptop G560 similar to lenovo G565

The Lenovo IdeaPad G560 is a feature-rich low-end laptop, meant to meet the basic needs of businessmen and executives. The addition of eSATA and HDMI ports provide value for money, while the presence of special multimedia buttons embossed on a glassy surface adds a touch of class to the design aesthetics of the laptop. It makes a decent buy at Rs. 31,990 with basic multimedia and executive style features. However, its weak performance across all the tests including gaming, will disappoint the performance hungry freaks and gamers.

Pros
  • Affordable
  • One touch recovery
  • Addition of e-SATA & HDMI ports
  • Biometric login

Cons
  • Weak performer
  • No dedicated video card
  • Cramped key-spacing

The Lenovo IdeaPad G560 looks no different than its elder sibling - the G565, which we havereviewed earlier. However, subtle changes add a touch of class to the G560, giving it an identity of its own. Unlike the G565, the cover lid, screen bezel and the keypad layout are all coated in glossy black finish. While the rear-panel and the palm-rest are still coated in matte black finish, the keypad keys coated in glossy black and add a stark contrast to the textured battery compartment above the keypad. The screen bezel is marked with tread-like textures & decorated with four buttons each at the top and bottom, giving it an antique look. The glaring shiny surface on the cover lid and palm-rest are vulnerable to fingerprint smudges, compromising any positives derived from its antique yet stylish design.

The Lenovo IdeaPad G560 is quite bulky weighing in at about 2.63 kgs. Inheriting the most characteristic features from itselder sibling – the G565, the G560 also incorporates subtle changes such as capslock & numlock status indicators, as well as mute, volume up/down and video recording buttons located at the top of the keypad. It is a welcome change to see the addition of eSATA and HDMI ports which were missing on the G565. The special status LED indicators, the Wi-Fi on/off switch and the multi-format memory card reader add value for money.

Malware to be serve by Microsoft adCenter network

Microsoft’s adCenter network (formerly MSN adCenter) has been found to be serving up malware via drive-by download exploits.

Armorize, a security solutions firm, describes the incident in a full informational blog posting. Attackers registered a domain name similar to an official advertising technology firm to dupe Microsoft adCenter and DoubleClick into authorizing the fake adverts. Attackers registered ADShufffle.com, similar to ADSuffle.com. The malicious ads were then served on both advertising networks for a short period of time.

Known sites that were affected included realestate.msn.com, msnbc.com and mail.live.com. Armorize investigated the reports after the adverts went live on December 3 and quickly rectified them with both DoubleClick and Microsoft’s adCenter. The attackers used the Eleonore exploit pack and the Neosploit package to install malware onto users PCs. Visitors could have been infected without having to click on any sites. “Over the past week, ADShufffle kept on changing the malware. Besides HDD Plus, other types of malware, such as backdoors, have been serve,” wrote Wayne Huang of Amorize.

NSS Labs suggests Microsoft’s Internet Explorer offers the best protection against socially engineered malware

A new report from NSS Labs suggests Microsoft’s Internet Explorer offers the best protection against socially-engineered malware.

NSS Labs, an independent, information security research and testing organisation released its findings in a report (PDF) entitled “web browser security socially-engineered malware protection.” NSS claim that Internet Explorer 9 beta caught “an exceptional” 99% of all live threats. NSS suggests this is due to Microsoft’s new application reputation system in IE9. The results lead the pack by 8.5%.

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8 also fared well, catching 90.2% of all live threats. This is a 5% improvement from Q1 2010. The closest competitor was Firefox 3.6 at 19.5% followed by Safari 5 at 10.9% and Chrome 6 at 3.4%. Opera caught 0% of the live threats, providing virtually no protection against socially-engineered malware. NSS describes Microsoft’s results in the report:

It became obvious from this test and comparisons to the earlier test that Microsoft continues to improve their IE malware protection in Internet Explorer 8 (through its SmartScreen Filter technology) and in Internet Explorer 9 (with the addition of SmartScreen application reputation technology). With a unique URL blocking score of 94.5% and over-time protection rating of 98.7%, Internet Explorer 9 was by far the best at protecting against socially-engineered malware. The 89% zero-hour block rate suggests a far superior malware identification, collection, and classification method.

Microsoft was understandably upbeat over the report, the software giant issued the following statement:

With Malware the most common and impactful security threat facing internet users today, Internet Explorer 9 Beta has delivered a robust set of built-in security, privacy, and reliability technologies that allow you to browse in total confidence and control. Security and privacy are of paramount importance to the Internet Explorer team, we are continuing to improve our offerings including announcing the latest privacy protection update in Internet Explorer 9.

Microsoft revealed earlier this month that the IE9 beta has clocked up over 15 million downloads. Internet Explorer 9 beta made its debut on September 15 to a fanfare of Gorillaz appearances and anticipation of Microsoft’s new look browser. The software giant is currently preparing for a release of Internet Explorer 9 Release Candidate (RC) in early 2011. The company recently unveiled a new “Tracking Protection” feature for Internet Explorer 9 and in-doing so revealed a new build of IE9. WinRumors understands this build is very close to what will become the final RC code ready for early 2011. The build features square tabs and minor UI enhancements to the address bar buttons in Internet Explorer 9. Microsoft is widely expected to deliver the RC build of IE9 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in a few weeks time.

Microsoft demonstrate new Windows7 based Slate devices at CES

Microsoft will demonstrate new Windows based Slate devices at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January.

The software giant is expected to show-off a number of new devices from key hardware partners. The New York Times reports that the company will show devices built by Samsung and Dell. The Samsung device will be a similar size and shape to Apple’s iPad and include a “unique and slick keyboard that slides out from below for easy typing.”

Both the Dell and Samsung devices will run Windows 7 with a custom UI on top for accessing multimedia functions. Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, is expected to introduce both devices during his CES 2011 keynote.

Microsoft has promised a “major revamp” of Windows for slate applications, that will come in the next version, Windows 8. The New York Times suggests that Ballmer may show off a Windows 8 based Slate but WinRumors understands this is not the case. The software maker may show off a future Tablet/Slate concept device but will not refer to Windows 8 specifically. Microsoft is currently in the planning and preperation stage for Windows 8 and is compiling early milestone builds for product functionality.

Microsoft has been criticized for its slow response to Apple’s iPad device, introduced in April this year. Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, previously said Windows 7 based Slates would be available “as soon as they’re ready” when questioned earlier this year. The iPad sold three million units in its first 80 days of release and is currently selling approximately 4.5 million units per quarter, Bernstein Research estimates.

Microsoft Chairman, Bill Gates, said earlier this year that the company has a lot of different tablet projects it is pursuing. Microsoft canceled their internal Courier project shortly after the release of the iPad. The project was an innovative new tablet concept that had promised to combine a dual screen book design with finger and stylus input. The leaked promotional materials demonstrated various concepts that would have brought an unparalleled productivity tool to the market. Most media outlets and analysts felt the move to cancel the device was a mistake

Microsoft released 2.0 Antivirus tool

Microsoft has finalized and released the second version of its free anti-virus tool, Security Essentials.

The final release, build 2.0.657, has been released to the web and introduces several new features. Context menu scanning, heuristic scanning, remove quarantined files after a certain date and the ability to enable a network inspection system to protect against network-based exploits are all included.

Microsoft introduced Security Essentials, its free anti-virus software, in September 2009. Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is designed to work on Windows XP, Vista and 7 and protects end users against virus threats and spy ware. MSE is Microsoft’s free anti-virus and anti-spyware product that replaced Microsoft’s paid Windows Live OneCare subscription service which was withdrawn last year. The software giant made a u-turn in licensing recently when it announced Small Businesses can now download and install the product on up to 10 PCs. Previously, businesses were unable to install the software legally due to a End User Licensing Agreement (EULA) restriction.

Security Essentials 2.0 is available at Microsoft’s download site.

Two new iPhone game applications

Microsoft has released two new iPhone game apps today and an Android music streaming application.

The “decision engine” has revealed the holiday themed applications in time for Christmas. The first application, named Snowboard Hero, is available for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad owners. The game allows you to snowboard on four steep runs. The second application, named Powerboat Challenge, is available for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad owners. The game is a simple powerboat challenge that allows players to complete courses and upgrade their boats to bigger engines.

Microsoft has also developed an Android application that streams 100 different holiday tunes. The application is available until January 2, 2011. Although iOS and Android are covered, the software giant seems to have completely forgotten about Windows Phone 7. The applications are available on rival platforms but not Microsoft’s own. Some commenters on Microsoft’s Bing blog pointed out the admission. “Where is the WP7 stuff??? Kind of ironic that I need to own an Apple product to use a Microsoft one” wrote one, “Where’s the WP7 love…kinda feelin’ left out,” wrote another.

Microsoft is said to improve on Kinect Xbox 360 and block sex games

Microsoft is said to be working on improving the accuracy of the Kinect Xbox 360 add-on whilst promising to block sex games using the device.

Microsoft Kinect developers are currently working on creating an improved compression and switching technology that will allow the Kinect to process larger amounts of data to the Xbox 360. The current issue with Kinect is that the USB controller interface is only currently using 15 MBps when it is capable of around 35 MBps according to Eurogamer.

Microsoft is currently working on ways to improve the USB bandwidth without affecting other devices connected to the Xbox 360. The software giant could also double the depth the sensor uses to detect movement. The sensor currently works at 30 frames per second and with a 320×340 resolution limit. Eurogamer suggests that at 640×480 the Kinect could begin to detect fingers and hand rotation and effectively quadruple its accuracy.

In other Kinect news, Microsoft said it will block software developer ThriXXX from releasing new Kinect software on the Xbox 360. ThriXXX had planned to offer a sex game that allow players to use hand gestures, voice commands and objects to stimulate sexual acts. In a statement to the media, Microsoft said it would not condone such a game for Kinect. “This isn’t the first example of a technology being used in ways not intended by its manufacturer, and it won’t be the last,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “Microsoft did not authorize or license its technology for this use.”

Good Start For Microsft Windows 7 Phone

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 Marketplace is off to a good start, according to research firm IDC.

The Marketplace has reached 4,000 apps in just two months since launch and IDC analyst, Al Hilwa, believes this is a sign that the company’s app portfolio is growing. “The Windows Phone 7 Marketplace reaching 4,000 apps two months after launch has to be one of the most rapid ramp-ups in recent times, reaching this milestone faster than Android, which took from October 2008 to March 2009 to reach about the same level,” wrote Hilwa in a research note on December 19.

“We can say that for a company that just a few months ago was an also-ran in mobile, having 10 smartphones released in 30 countries is not a trivial achievement,” Hilwa wrote, according to eWeek. “I would not be surprised if Microsoft had the third largest app portfolio in the industry by the middle of next year.”

Microsoft is still refusing to confirm exact sales figures for Windows Phone 7. The company now has over 18,000 registered Windows Phone developers and has promised developer payments in January. Early estimates, based on Facebook usage, show that around 120,000+ devices have been sold so far.

Microsoft is planning to release a Windows Phone 7 OS update in early 2011. Microsoft is officially saying that the update is due in early 2011 but WinRumors understands Microsoft officials will detail the upcoming changes at CES. Windows Phone 7 is a key part of Microsoft’s long term mobile strategy and we expect the software giant to detail a second bigger update in February at the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona, Spain. Microsoft’s second update will introduce enhanced developer controls for applications and updated Silverlight components. Microsoft’s first update recently leaked in a video of the company’s implementation of Windows Phone 7 copy and paste.

Microsoft will focus heavily on PC gaming in Windows 8

Microsoft will focus heavily on PC gaming in Windows 8 according to recent reports.

TechRadar says that an anonymous source at Microsoft has confirmed the software giant will focus on PC gaming in the next generation operating system. “Windows 8 will represent a real new push into PC gaming,” the source told TechRadar. “Gaming will be a key component for the whole OS.”

Microsoft has been criticized for its efforts with PC gaming in Vista and Windows 7. The software maker recently hired the founder of VoodooPC in what many believe is a move to focus on PC gaming as a priority in Windows.

Microsoft has also promised a “major revamp” of Windows for slate devices in Windows 8. Microsoft is currently in the planning and preparation stage for Windows 8. The software giant is expected to share more information and beta bits next year. Steve Ballmer has described the next release of Windows as the company’s “riskiest product bet”. It is understood that Microsoft will feature deep cloud integration into the future OS to realise its vision of “three screens and a cloud”. Microsoft’s Dutch PR team posted in October that Microsoft was “on course for the next version of Windows” and that it would take around “two years before Windows 8 is on the market"

Motorola's Android Honeycomb to be Disclosed at CES

Motorola's Android Honeycomb to be Disclosed at CES

Hey, guess what? We're going to get another tablet at CES in January. No huge surprise there--we're anticipating an utter deluge of the devices at the show. Motorola is seemingly attempting to undercut some of those last minute iPad/Samsung Galaxy Christmas purchase with a little teaser of its own announcement.
The company used its @MotoMobile Twitter page to kick off speculation, tweeting, "Might want to hold off on that tablet purchase until 2011." The page linked to a tongue-in-cheek CGI tour of the "evolution of tablets," including such detours as the Rosetta Stone ("Good graphics, but weight makes for difficult portability") and the Ten Commandments ("Excellent durability, but zero flexibility").

The company also used the occasion to take potshots at the competition, the iPad ("It's like a giant iPhone, but...it's like a giant iPhone") and the Samsung Galaxy Tab ("Android OS, but Android OS...for a phone"). The video finishes on a shot of what we're led to assume is the shrouded unannounced Motorola tablet.

Not a lot of info here, but between the Samsung comment and the fact that Motorola has had some recent success with Android, as of late, we can probably assume that the thing will run Google's mobile--the tablet version. The goofy little animated bee also hints at the use of the Android "Honeycomb" build. As for a name? The Motorola Evolution, perhaps?

Install Skype to BlackBerry | Blackberry skype | How to install skype to Blackberry

skype-blackberryBlackBerry is awesome. You can perfectly download a lot of applications and make use all of them to launch your business and busy working days well organized. I did believe in that you choose Blackberry because of that the mobile phone are designed especially for those busy worker but a busy networkers all at once. One of the greatest features BlackBerry has to amuse all its users is its ability to run Skype.

Thus, it would be great to log into your Skype account and hold a teleconference with many of your business partner. What do you think? Or, you can probably use the Skype to keep in touch will all of your old friends from your home town as well.

However, how can you download the Skype to your BlackBerry? Some BlackBerry owners have got the technical details to do that, but some others have no idea at all. But, downloading Skype is not difficult you would only do several easy steps as follow.

First, Connect your BlackBerry through Wi-Fi. Visit the iSkoot website and click “Download now.”

Second, after the registration, you have to put in your phone model, and other relevance information such as phone number, your Skype name, and your country.

Third, when the site gives you choices if you want to download iSkoot to your computer or to your phone, you are free to pick one of them.

Fourth, Log into Skype account and put in your mobile number. But, you will be charged air time and data charges whenever you make Skype calls or use it as instant messaging. If the Skype is used to call non-Skype phones, you need SkypeOut minutes.

Fifth, download WebMessanger from the WebMessenger site, but you would be asked to register first. After all, download the WebMessanger Mobile for Skype desktop plug-in on the same unit you use for Skype. The data time is not free and it needs SkypeOut credit when you make a call to non-Skype phones.

Sixth, it’s the time to download Skype to your BlackBerry by first visiting the Skype website and clicking “Go Mobile.”
